When Does Drug Abuse Become Dependency?
When talking about drug abuse and dependency, many people think of them as being one and the same, but the truth is that there is a difference betwen dependency to drugs and the abuse of drugs. Dependency does begin with drug abuse, but addiction is much more than a lot of drug use.
Drug misuse is basically the repeated or uncontrolled use of controlled substances. You could also define it as misusing a chemical substance habitually. Using drugs for something other than their intended purpose is what this definition includes. In fact, drug abuse has a range of definitions, but all suggest disapproval at the use or overuse of a drug for non-therapeutic reasons.
On the other hand drug dependency happens when a persons body becomes addicted to having that chemical in their system and when they don’t have it they can suffer from withdrawls that cause physical and real adverse symptoms to the person addicted. Lots of the drugs out there mess with the way that the brain function and alter it to where it cannot function correctly without the drug.
People who are addicted to drugs, will use the drug no matter what type of adverse health reactions they get from doing so. This behavior causes them to have complete disregard for their personal health as long as I get that next high or head change and that they need. For these people quitting really isn’t a very easy option for them. When a person reaches this point with their drug misuse, it becomes an addiction and must be dealt with accordingly.
Understanding the implications of drug use and addiction can help keep people on track and away from coming to the point of dependency in their habit. You know exactly what type of dependency you are dealing with, it makes it quite a lot easier to find options for treatment.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s you are loved one that is addicted to or abusing drugs, people who are in this situation and life need to seek out a drug treatment program as soon as they can in order to protect themselves from serious health problems. Drug treatment can profoundly affect both the user and society. Setting addicts free from their addictions in the society that we live in enables these people to function more effectively in society and get along with people better which creates a better and more peaceful society in general.
Drug abuse is overall the number one cause of deaths and illness that are preventable in the United States. It doesn’t matter if we talk about cocaine, heroin, or alcohol, a drug is a drug and those drugs cause problems with the human body. Drug use can be prevented, and getting people educated about it is the first step.
Drug abuse and dependency are blights on society. These problems have been around for many many years, and are likely to be around for a while longer, but recognizing the differences between the two will allow you to pay attention to the different signs and signals which can alert you to the problem and help you to take steps towards healing.
